How to cancel Dropbox

There are two possible routes, and using the wrong one is why people cancel Dropbox and still get charged. Check which applies to you first.

Typical price $11.99 / month That's $143.88 a year Category Cloud

First: work out who is billing you

This is the step people skip. Dropbox can be billed either by Apple (if you subscribed inside an iPhone or iPad app) or by Dropbox directly (if you signed up on their website). Only the biller can cancel it.

To check: open Settingsyour nameSubscriptions on your iPhone. If Dropbox appears there, Apple bills you — use route A. If it does not, use route B.

Route A — billed by Apple

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your name at the very top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap the subscription, then Cancel Subscription.

Route B — billed by Dropbox directly

  1. Sign in at dropbox.com and open your avatar → Settings.
  2. Go to the Plan tab.
  3. Click Cancel plan and follow the confirmation.

Go straight to the Dropbox cancellation page →

Worth knowing: ⚠️ Dropbox free is only 2 GB. If you are storing more than that, files stop syncing and you risk losing access to the excess. Download everything before you downgrade.

What happens after you cancel

You revert to Dropbox Basic at 2 GB at the end of the billing period. Files over the limit stay in the cloud but the account is frozen for new syncs until you get under the cap.

Always confirm it worked. Look for a cancellation email, and re-open the billing page to check the status reads cancelled or "ends on [date]". Then set a calendar reminder for the day after the period ends and check your card statement. A surprising number of cancellations do not take on the first attempt.

Before you cancel: is downgrading better?

Most services have a cheaper tier that people never look at, and several offer a pause instead of a cancellation. If you use Dropbox occasionally rather than never, a lower plan or a temporary pause usually beats cancelling and resubscribing at a higher price later.
