How to cancel any subscription

Step-by-step cancellation guides for 33 of the most common subscriptions — including the part most guides skip: working out whether Apple or the service itself is actually billing you.

Start here if you are not sure. Open Settingsyour nameSubscriptions on your iPhone. Anything on that list is billed by Apple and cancelled there. Anything not on that list is billed directly by the company, and you have to cancel on their website. Using the wrong route is the single most common reason a cancellation does not stick.

The four rules of cancelling anything

  1. Find the biller first, not the cancel button. Apple, the service, or a reseller like Amazon Channels or a mobile carrier. Only the biller can cancel.
  2. Cancel before the renewal date, not on it. Most services bill at the start of a period and give no partial refunds, so cancelling the day after renewal costs you a full cycle.
  3. Extract your data first where it applies — password managers, cloud storage, and audiobook credits are the ones that bite. Each guide flags this where relevant.
  4. Verify twice. Look for the confirmation email, then check your card statement after the period ends.

Consider pausing instead

Several services — Hulu, YouTube Premium, and Audible among them — offer a pause of a few weeks to a few months. The cancellation flow usually buries it, because pausing keeps you as a subscriber. If your problem is that you are not using something right now rather than never using it, pausing avoids resubscribing later at whatever the current, higher price is.

After you cancel

The subscription you just cancelled was probably not the only one you had forgotten about. This guide walks through finding every subscription on your iPhone, including the card-billed ones that never appear in Settings — and the calculator shows what the remainder adds up to over a year.
