How to cancel Spotify

There are two possible routes, and using the wrong one is why people cancel Spotify and still get charged. Check which applies to you first.

Typical price $11.99 / month That's $143.88 a year Category Music

First: work out who is billing you

This is the step people skip. Spotify can be billed either by Apple (if you subscribed inside an iPhone or iPad app) or by Spotify directly (if you signed up on their website). Only the biller can cancel it.

To check: open Settingsyour nameSubscriptions on your iPhone. If Spotify appears there, Apple bills you — use route A. If it does not, use route B.

Route A — billed by Apple

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your name at the very top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap the subscription, then Cancel Subscription.

Route B — billed by Spotify directly

  1. Go to spotify.com and log in.
  2. Open AccountManage your plan.
  3. Choose Cancel Premium and confirm.

Go straight to the Spotify cancellation page →

Worth knowing: If you subscribed inside the iPhone app, Spotify cannot cancel it for you — you must do it in Settings → your name → Subscriptions, and Spotify will show a message saying so. Also check whether you are on a Family plan someone else manages, in which case only the plan owner can remove you.

What happens after you cancel

You drop to the free tier rather than losing the account. Playlists, saved albums, and followers all stay; you lose offline downloads and ads come back.

Always confirm it worked. Look for a cancellation email, and re-open the billing page to check the status reads cancelled or "ends on [date]". Then set a calendar reminder for the day after the period ends and check your card statement. A surprising number of cancellations do not take on the first attempt.

Before you cancel: is downgrading better?

Most services have a cheaper tier that people never look at, and several offer a pause instead of a cancellation. If you use Spotify occasionally rather than never, a lower plan or a temporary pause usually beats cancelling and resubscribing at a higher price later.
