Recurra AI vs Rocket Money

These two apps look like competitors and mostly are not. One is a full personal-finance platform that needs access to your bank. The other is a subscription tool that never asks for it. The right answer depends almost entirely on how you feel about that one question.

The short version

Rocket Money connects to your bank through Plaid, reads your transaction history, and uses it to surface recurring charges automatically. On top of that it does budgeting, net worth tracking, credit score monitoring, and offers a concierge service that cancels subscriptions and negotiates bills on your behalf.

Recurra does one thing: it tracks what you are subscribed to, warns you before every renewal, and gives you a verdict on each one — keep, cancel, downgrade, or watch. It has no bank integration, no account system, and no server that holds your list.

The real trade-off

Automatic detection is genuinely valuable, and it is the thing Recurra cannot do. If you have a charge from 2023 you have completely forgotten about, Rocket Money will find it and Recurra will not, because Recurra cannot see your bank account. That is not a limitation we are working around — it is a deliberate design decision, and it costs you something real.

What you get in exchange is that no third party ever holds a token that can read your account activity. There is no aggregator in the middle, no server-side copy of your spending, and nothing to revoke later if you stop using the app. We wrote about that trade-off in more depth here.

Worth knowing about negotiation fees: bill negotiation services charge a percentage of what they save you, typically billed up front against the first year. If a negotiation lowers a bill by $240 a year, a 40% fee means roughly $96 out of pocket. That can still be worth it — but it is a real cost, and it is separate from the monthly subscription.

Which one you should actually pick

Pick Recurra if…

  • Linking your bank to an app is a dealbreaker
  • You mostly know what you subscribe to and want reminders, not discovery
  • You want a flat price with no success fees attached
  • You want advice on each subscription, not just a dashboard
  • You are on iPhone or iPad and want it to stay on your device

Pick Rocket Money if…

  • You want subscriptions found for you, automatically
  • You suspect there are charges you have genuinely forgotten
  • You want budgeting and net worth in the same app
  • You would rather someone else do the cancelling and haggling
  • You need Android or a web app

They are also not mutually exclusive. Plenty of people use a bank-connected app once to do a clean sweep of what they are paying for, then keep a private tracker for the ongoing reminders.

Track subscriptions without handing over your bank

No bank integration. No account. Your list stays on your iPhone, and the monthly review is generated there too.
