How to track subscriptions without connecting your bank account

Nearly every subscription tracker on the App Store opens with the same request: link your bank. If that is a dealbreaker for you, you are not being paranoid — and you do have options.

Why these apps want your bank in the first place

Automatic detection is a genuinely useful feature. To offer it, an app needs to read your transaction history, and to read your transaction history it routes you through an aggregator — usually Plaid, sometimes MX or Finicity. You enter your online banking credentials into a screen inside a third-party app, and from then on that aggregator holds a token that can read your account activity.

Three things follow from that, and they are all worth knowing before you tap "Continue":

• Your data leaves your device permanently. It has to. Detection runs on a server, not on your phone.
• You are trusting two companies, not one. The app and the aggregator behind it.
• The connection outlives your interest in the app. Deleting an app does not revoke a bank connection. You have to revoke it separately — in your bank's settings, or through the aggregator's own portal.

The manual alternative, and why it's less work than it sounds

The objection to manual tracking is always the same: it is tedious and you will not keep it up. That is true of a spreadsheet. It is not true of an app built for it, for one reason — subscriptions barely change. You add them once. After that the app does the work, because the thing you actually need is not detection, it is a reminder before each renewal.

Getting your list without a bank connection

1. Start with your Apple subscriptions. Settings → your name → Subscriptions shows everything billed through your Apple Account. In Recurra you can screenshot that page and the app reads the names, prices, and dates with on-device text recognition. Full walkthrough here.
2. Check your card statement once. One pass through last month's statement, looking only for repeated names. This is the only genuinely manual step, and you do it a single time.
3. Add the obvious ones from a catalog. Netflix, Spotify, iCloud+, ChatGPT — tapping a name from a preset list fills in the typical price for you.
4. Stop. You are done. From here it is reminders, not data entry.

What you give up, honestly

Two things, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise:

• Discovery of things you have genuinely forgotten. An app that cannot see your bank cannot surprise you with a $9.99 charge from 2023. Your one statement review has to do that job.
• Automatic price updates. If a service raises its price, a bank-connected app sees the new amount on the next charge. A manual tracker knows only what you told it — so it has to prompt you to confirm the price instead.

What you keep is everything else: the total, the renewal calendar, the category breakdown, and the reminders. For most people that is the entire value of the category.

A checklist for evaluating any tracker

• Does it work at all without a bank connection, or is that the only path through onboarding?
• Does it require an account? If so, your data is on someone's server by definition.
• Read the App Store privacy card — specifically "Data Linked to You".
• If it does connect to a bank, which aggregator, and how do you revoke it later?
• Does it export? If you cannot get your list out, you are locked in.
