How to cancel Netflix

There are two possible routes, and using the wrong one is why people cancel Netflix and still get charged. Check which applies to you first.

Typical price $15.49 / month That's $185.88 a year Category Streaming

First: work out who is billing you

This is the step people skip. Netflix can be billed either by Apple (if you subscribed inside an iPhone or iPad app) or by Netflix directly (if you signed up on their website). Only the biller can cancel it.

To check: open Settingsyour nameSubscriptions on your iPhone. If Netflix appears there, Apple bills you — use route A. If it does not, use route B.

Route A — billed by Apple

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your name at the very top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap the subscription, then Cancel Subscription.

Route B — billed by Netflix directly

  1. Sign in at netflix.com in a browser (the iOS app hides billing controls).
  2. Open Account from the profile menu.
  3. Under your plan, choose Cancel Membership.
  4. Confirm — the page tells you the exact date access ends.

Worth knowing: Netflix stopped offering App Store billing to new members years ago, so almost nobody can cancel it from iPhone Settings — it is billed to your card directly. If you are a long-standing subscriber who signed up through iTunes, check Settings → your name → Subscriptions first.

What happens after you cancel

You keep full access until the end of the period you have already paid for. Profiles, viewing history, and lists are held for 10 months, so restarting later picks up where you left off.

Always confirm it worked. Look for a cancellation email, and re-open the billing page to check the status reads cancelled or "ends on [date]". Then set a calendar reminder for the day after the period ends and check your card statement. A surprising number of cancellations do not take on the first attempt.

Before you cancel: is downgrading better?

Most services have a cheaper tier that people never look at, and several offer a pause instead of a cancellation. If you use Netflix occasionally rather than never, a lower plan or a temporary pause usually beats cancelling and resubscribing at a higher price later.
